Rise Biscuits and Donuts Is Now Open In Savannah

Breakfast Sandwiches
I have been in Savannah for two years, and I have disappointed in the lack of breakfast places and bakeries downtown. Now that has changed with the opening of Rise Biscuits and Donuts. Rise started in Durham, North Carolina and now it is about six cities in the Southeast. The Savannah location is the first one in Georgia. If you work downtown, you will be happy to know that Rise opens early at 7AM. It is located at 10 West Broughton Street.

Yesterday I stopped by for the ribbon cutting, and I enjoyed a bacon egg and cheese biscuit as well as a chocolate doughnut and a Cheerwine doughnut. The Cheerwine one has an icing that tastes like the North Carolina’s favorite soda, Cheerwine.  I highly recommend Rise and I like that they also give back to the local community. 10% of the sales on their opening day  July 1st will go to the Low Country Down Syndrome Society. Follow Rise Biscuits on Facebook.

New In Savannah: Ghost Coast Distillery

This past weekend, I went to the newly opened Ghost Coast Distillery which is located at 641 Indian Street near the Talmadge Bridge. Ghost Coast is the first distillery in Savannah in 261 years.  The tour itself starts with a video that gives a great history of drinking in Savannah. The video mentions essential figures in Savannah history including James Oglethorpe, the Yamacraw, and Chief Tomochichi. The name of their first Vodka, Vodka 261, pays homage to the 261 years between the end of Georgia’s first prohibition to the establishment of Ghost Coast Distillery. The tour includes a visit to the aging room for the bourbon they are making. In three years, there will also be bourbon available to drink. BTW, you can find Ghost Coast 261 vodka at Alleycat Lounge, a new cocktail bar.The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and after the tour we got to have a Vodka Gimlet and a Moscow Mule. I would recommend the tour to learn about Savannah history and the craft distilling process.

Shop The Fox

Happy Sunday!

Yesterday, I stopped by the Savannah Book Festival yesterday and I got a cookbook,  The Casserole Queens Make-a-Meal Cookbook.

Shop The Fox, the shop next door to Foxy Loxy, is closing and a big moving sale is happening today (Sunday, February 19th). I love the space, and look forward to its next incarnation in the near future.

Ghost Coast Distillery is now open! Ghost Coast is the first legal craft distillery to open in Savannah in 100 years. The distillery is located on 641 Indian Street. You can go for a tour and a tasting. Like them on Facebook to check out their schedule and events.

The Savannah Stopover is coming up soon, March 9-11th.  I went last year and I had a blast checking out bands that I never heard of like PWR BTTM.   Now, they’re getting press in Fader.

Hurricane Matthew Hit Savannah

Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew stormed through Savannah on October 7th. I didn’t evacuate. I didn’t lose power. I was here in the house alone and I got scared. My next door neighbors keep me calm and well-fed.  We even had a little dance party the night before the hurricane  where we danced to Sylvester and Miami Sound Machine. Anyway, I am blessed to have good people around.  Starlandia Creative Supply opened up last Sunday and set up a makeshift charging station with free coffee and wifi.  I hung out there talking to fellow Savannahnians who “hunkered down” for the hurricane. By the way, if you do a shot every time the local new anchors say “hunker down” then you will be drunk.

Urban Poppy, the wedding boutique and gift store in my neighborhood, also had a charging station and free wifi.  I had never been inside the store, and it’s lovely.  It’s a great local place for gifts. Their generosity was appreciated by me.  I didn’t get internet until last Friday.

The cleanup has already started around Savannah as people clearing tree limbs off the streets and sidewalks.  There are historic trees down.  There is lost of tourist business, paychecks, and income.  Savannah is a small city with a big heart.  I hope everyone will come together to rebuild and renew.

Savannah Art Walk September 2016

Art Walk Collage

Fall is almost here, and the season of the Savannah Art Walk kicked off on Saturday.  I have enjoyed the monthly art walk and I think it is one of Savannah’s best free art events.  However, this season they changed a few things that I think may be detrimental to discovering local art in Savannah.

First, let me start by listing the four main things that have changed.

  1. Last year, the hotel that hosted the opening reception has changed.  It was the Bohemian Hotel, and now it is at the River Street Inn.
  2. The Art Walk starts earlier.  It used to commence at 4PM, but now it starts at 2PM.
  3. The qualifications to enter the drawing has changed.  Last year, you had to get your Savannah Art Map initialed by 10 venues. Now, you have to make a purchase of $20 or more and show your receipt to enter the raffle. Since you have to purchase something to enter, it is no longer a drawing, but it is now a raffle.
  4. The closing reception is now at the terrace pool of the Andaz Hotel. It’s very nice and relaxing, and you still get to drink a few glasses of wine.

Second, I will go over what I like this season.  Changing the time to 2PM is a great idea.  I think it gives both locals and tourists to do something in the afternoon after brunch and before dinner.  It facilitates walking around and hanging out in historic Savannah for hours.  The earlier start doesn’t disrupt evening plans as the event ends around 6PM if you don’t stay for the raffle and closing reception.

A

The terrace pool at the Andaz Hotel is lovely and you can dip your toes in the pool when it is warm, and sit around the fire when the weather gets cool.

Third,  the changing of the venue from the Bohemian to the River Street Inn would not be a big deal if the area didn’t feel as cramped. This can be remedied easily by actually removing some of the tables and chairs.  The  Spider Tea cocktail sponsored by El-Rocko Lounge may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I enjoyed it.

Lastly, the most significant change is moving away from free drawing to essentially a $20 raffle. To enter the raffle at the end of the art walk, you must purchase something at one of the venues that it at least $20.  If the goal is to get more people to spend money at the various venues on the art walk route, then maybe this will work. However, I personally like to talk to many artists and look at their work. Going to at least ten places to get your  map signed made the art walk a game.  The gamification of the art walk was a major appeal. People actually enjoy getting their maps initialed by artist, gallery owner or store employee.  There are fifteen venues on the map that you can try to visit in three hours. It is very much like how people love to play Pokémon GO.   Now, the incentive is gone to go to as many places as possible.  It also makes it less likely that people will go farther away from the City Market and Broughton Street area.  Roots Up Gallery located on Liberty Street is a great folk art gallery is one that shouldn’t be missed.

I will continue to attend Savannah Art Walk, because I like talking to artists and seeing their work.   I just hope that the organizers make sure that the changes are aligned with the goals of the artists which is to get more people to see their art, and for people to have more fun.

Watch What Happens In Savannah: El-Rocko Lounge, Top Deck And More

Double Standard #cocktail at new #savannah barlounge El Rocko Lounge #campari

El-Rocko Lounge is the new hot bar in Savannah. I stopped by last Friday on its opening night.  It’s retro decor and delicious cocktails are worth a visit.  I had a cocktail with Campari and it was delicious. It is the type of place that I would expect to hear the entire Daptone Records catalog. El-Rocko will also host live music shows, so it is a nice addition to Whitaker Street.

Whiskey Cocktail at Top Deck

My new favorite place for people watching is the Top Deck Bar at the Cotton Sail Hotel.  The crowd is a mix of bachelor parties, southern belles, fancy tourists, and seersucker-wearing frat boys.

Fashion Bazaar at Savannah Bazaar

Jelinek Creative Spaces hosted Savannah Bazaar this past Saturday. It was fashion-themed with a fashion show. I took some photos.

Crash Comedy Savannah Bananas

I will be performing on May 17th at Crash Comedy at The Sentient Bean. Crash Comedy is a fun monthly comedy show of sketch comedy and storytelling.
