My Taste Of Savannah Stopover

Savannah Stopover

The Thursday before last, I went to the first night of Savannah Stopover to see some of the up and coming bands.  It was fun! I couldn’t go the other nights because I went to visit family last weekend.  Other than Ra Ra Riot,  I had never heard of the bands I saw. However, they were good. Ra Ra Riot headlined a show with two other bands at Ships of The Sea Museum.

First up was local Savannah band, Breakers,  who sound like what would happen if surf rock met up with Joy Division and Depeche Mode. Lead singer Samford Juice has such confidence on stage.  He reminds me of the lead singer of The Liars, Angus Andrew. [BTW, I saw The Liars perform at the Siren Music Festival back in either 2002 or 2003.] Anyway, the band’s pretty good.

Next up was Sun Club.  Sun Club is a band from Baltimore, and the music is pop meets punk.  Listen to them on Sun Club.

Then I went to Club One to see DEGA perform. With only two people, DEGA is like a downsized version of Dirty Projectors. Asyln and Kalen are based in Athens, GA.  They just did a showcase at SXSW.

I did see a little bit of T.Hardy Morris at Congress St. Social Club, but not long enough. The music is alt-country rock. After the stopover, he was part of an “Athens in Austin” music showcase.

The last act I saw that night was PWR BTTM at Ampersand. PWR BTTM is a queer punk duo who do witty banter like Kiki and Herb but they play guitar and drums.

Savannah Stopover: The Alternative To SXSW Music

Are you going to SXSW?! I’m not but this year I get to experience some of the best up and coming bands here in Savannah. The Savannah Stopover music festival is like pre-gaming for SXSW. From March 10-12th, there will 100 bands playing in 3 days at 10 venues in downtown Savannah. This is a great showcase of indie music featuring from all over the United States and a few acts from the UK and Europe.

The best thing is that the  Savannah Stopover is only $79 for a three-day pass.

Who’s playing?! When I first looked at the list, I only recognized Ra Ra Riot, Blitzen Trapper and French Horn Rebellion.  Then I listened to the Savannah Stopover playlist on Soundcloud, and I realized that I have listened to some of the bands before.  [Too bad I can’t fit the Shazam app on my phone.]

Beads And Bubble Mailers: Show Me Your Beads

Beads and Bubble Mailers

Everyone has ideas. Some of them are brilliant. Some of them have been done before. Some of them are dumb. Ideas are great, but the execution is what matters. Last week, I had an idea, and the reason I think it is a good one is because it can be executed easily and it is an opportunity for recycle stuff and do something good.

Loop It Up Savannah is one of the members of Jelinek Creative Spaces, a co-operative creative space for artists and entrepreneurs in Savannah. Molly Lieberman, a lady who greets everyone with a smile, is the founder of Loop It Up which creates opportunities for local kids to make art.

If you are like me, you probably have lots of beads from broken necklaces, bracelets or earring. That jewelry detritus can be donated to Loop It Up.

I am organizing a bead drive from now until April 1st. Details on how to donate are listed fully on the Beads and Bubbles LaunchRock page I created.

Chicken Liver Is Not Just Chopped Liver

Chicken Liver Mousse

Chicken liver is something that both Southern black people and Jewish people have in common. When I was a kid, I hated liver, whether beef or chicken. Beef liver with rice and gravy, and onions was one of my Dad’s dinner staples. Sidenote: My Dad is the primary cook in the family. My mom is great at making three things: pancakes, fried pork chops and fried chicken.

I became enamored with liver when I started eating foie gras and pate at fancy restaurants and going to fancy parties in New York. However, I don’t eat duck foie gras, and I don’t miss it. Chicken liver pate is delicious and inexpensive. You can make it at home.

The Grey has chicken liver on the menu. They have an appetizer of chicken liver mousse with a dash of sea salt and toasted Pullman bread from a local bakery, Back In The Day Bakery. I love it. The mousse is smooth and delicious. For only six bucks, it is a delicious bite to enjoy before dinner and/or drinks.

Savannah is Pink For Valentine’s Day

Pink in Savannah

I did a fun photo project yesterday. I walked around Savannah, taking photos of pink things. Then I made a collage using PicMonkey for my photos. I also stopped by the Savannah Book Festival when I saw author Rita Mae Brown speak. She is woke. I want to read her books, now. I noticed lots of couples walking around downtown Savannah, and there was a pub crawl for Valentine’s Day. At 4 PM, the pub crawlers were already out in full force wearing red and being obnoxious. Anyway, I decided to go back home to enjoy a quiet evening watching the last season of ‘Justified’ on Amazon Prime. Raylan Givens is my virtual valentine.

FOMO Prevention: Events in Savannah

I am still new to Savannah, having been here only 7 months.  I do enjoy being at home where I am often cooking, crocheting and binge-watching. However, I also like to go out and see art, music, comedy and what not. Whenever I get a case of FOMO (fear of missing out), I look around for something to do.

So here’s my list of where to find fun events in Savannah:

Offline, there are three free publications to check out. You can find them all around Savannah.  Connect Savannah and Do Savannah are weeklies and WellFED is a monthly.

What’s Happening in Savannah: Cheese, Pulse Art and Air Travel Deals

Vault Savannah

The construction on The Vault Kitchen and Market on Bull Street is coming along.  I would bet that it will be open by spring. It would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

I am loving the Meyer lemons that I am getting from the Forsyth Farmer’s Market. I add a slice to my  drinking water, squeeze juice on my baked chicken or just eat them like a grapefruit.

Allegiant Air is a low-cost airline that is expanding flights out of Savannah.  There are four new routes with direct flights to Savannah.  Tell your friends and family who live Baltimore, Indianapolis, Lexington and Pittsburgh.

The Savannah Cheese Club is having a fun event at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar on Thursday, January 28th. It is their first award party. Stop by for $5 Champagne Night and tasting of Lulu’s (42 Martin Luther King Blvd) distinctive cheese board. There will be a drawing for a chance to win a Lulu’s Gift Card and other raffle prizes.  [Gnatty Savannah will sponsor a raffle prize.]

The PULSE art and technology fair will be at Telfair from January 27-31st. Passes are free to members, and non-members pay only $15.  During the Pulse Art Fair, there will also the second annual GIF Festival.  Check out the five reasons to attend Pulse.

Four Of My Friends Came To Savannah

A few weeks ago, I got a text from my friend David.  He and Cat plus Mark and Wendy were coming to visit me for New Year’s.  Yay!  I looked for a place for them to stay but AirBnB options were scarce.  VRBO had more options, but most were out at Tybee Island. They ended staying at a hotel in the Southside area of Savannah, and taking Uber to get them to and fro downtown.  I am telling you this so you have an idea of lodging options.  By the way, Mashable just announced that Savannah is one of the places people should visit in 2016.

On the first night of the visit,  Mark, Wendy and I stopped by Green Truck Pub for a beer. The smell of the burgers was so distracting that we drank quickly and then walked over to The Florence where we had a reservation for dinner.  Luckily David and Cat were already there.  Also, Hugh Acheson was there. Hugh is the owner of The Florence, noted cookbook author and judge on Top Chef.

We got a photo with Hugh.  Gina, our wonderful server, took the photo. By the way, The Florence makes a red velvet cake with actual beets which Wendy make try to incorporate in her own red velvet cake recipe.  Her frosting includes mascarpone and it is delicious.

Thursday,  we walked around Broughton Street and River Streets.  We stopped by Kobo Gallery, Ancient Olive and later we had cocktails and oysters at The Grey.

On New Year’s Day, we went back to The Grey for oysters, collard greens and hoppin john.

After The Grey, we went to Service Brewing for their New Year’s Day event. Bunny Ware of the Savannah Morning News chatted with us. We also stopped into Coffee Fox and enjoyed kolaches.  By the way, get Lisa Fain’s cookbook, Homesick Texan,  to learn how to make kolaches.  Two of my friends did a mead tasting at Savannah Bee Company.

Later we went to 17hundred90 for dinner and a drink at famous dive bar Pinkie Masters. On Saturday afternoon, we went to Foxy Loxy, Gypsy World and had lunch at Starland Cafe.  It was great showing friends a bit of my Savannah.

Shop The Fox For Last Minute Holiday Gifts

Shop The Fox

If you live in the Starland district, then you are probably already a frequent visitor to Foxy Loxy. It’s a coffee shop but more. They serve tacos, kolaches, and in the evening there’s beer and wine. In addition, Foxy Loxy hosts Vinyl Night, comedy show and live music in the courtyard. While sipping coffee in Foxy Loxy, you are amazed to the well-curated print art. A few months ago, Foxy Loxy opened up a retail shop next door, Shop The Fox, that features accoutrements for coffee lovers as well as great gifts like candles, soap, tea towels and more. About 50% of the merchandise is from either Savannah area and Southern artisans including Methane Studios.

Shop The Fox is a great place for shopping for thoughtful last minute holiday gifts. They are open until 8PM on December 23rd, but not open on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
